PLANT NURSERY ESTABLISHMENT

 NURSERY ESTABLISHMENT
Nursery is a place where seeds are raised to seedlings. A nursery can be temporary, permanent, oasis nursery or floating nursery depending on the number of seedlings that needs to be raised, space availability, weather conditions, water source, accessibility, demand, terrain and the type of seed.
There are various processes involved in establishing a nursery these processes include
1.Seed procurement
2.Land clearing
3.Fencing
4.Sand filling
5.Watering
6.Stacking
Seed application e.t.c
 SEED PROCUREMENT
A seed is an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering. The formation of the seed is part of the process of reproduction in seed plants, Seed procurement involves the collection and preservation of seeds, there are many processes involved in seed collection and preservation.
After collection some seeds are preserved inside hot water while some prefer cold water, the seed is then put inside a preservation tray for sun drying, for effective germination of seed and to avoid seed from dormancy a seed must be matured and dried up before planting.
 LAND CLEARING
Availability of land is a must requirement for establishing a nursery, the land set aside for nursery establishment must be cleared of bushes, weeds, dirts and other factors that may likely affect the function of the nursery using clearing equipments such as broom, rake, hoe e.t.c
FENCING
The land set aside for nursery establishment must be fenced using mesh wire or other fencing equipment for protection from grazing animals and for visibility
 SAND FILLING
Top soil or sand is very important for nursery establishment as it provides a medium for seed germination. Top soil is mixed with organic manure(mostly cow dung) on the ratio 2:1 shovel and hoe are used for breaking and parking of hard soil particles, nylons are picked and removed from the soil mixture it is then filled into polythene pot using funnel, the polythene pot is pierced or punched for air penetration and excess water passage. polythene pot is preferable because of the dark surface which aid germination and it reduces the growth of weed.
WATERING
Watering is the method of pouring water on plants, after a mixture of Sand and cow dung is filled into polythene pot it is watered continuously until grasses appear this indicate the fertility of the soil and helps in decomposing the cation and reduces the heaviness of the ion.
STACKING
Stacking is the method of arranging sand filled polythene pot to make a complete seed bed(A seedbed is an area of ground, usually with specially prepared earth, where young plants are grown from seed.)spacing between one seed bed and another is essential as it aids accessibility, makes watering easy and for counting purpose.
 SEED APPLICATION
After stacking the next step is seed application, seed is applied on the prepared seedbed and watering continues. The length of the plant(seedlings) is measured from time to time to monitor growth progress.
In some cases seed bed is prepared directly on the ground (ground bed), and are later transplanted to polythene pot, it is observed that seed shoots faster when planted on ground bed than on polythene pot, but there is need for transplanting afterwards to reduce competition for nutrients among young seedlings.

 INSTRUMENTS USED IN NURSERY ESTABLISHMENT
1.Watering can
2.Funnel
3.Hoe
4.Rake
5.Brooms
6.Wheel barrow
7.Shovel
8.Polythene pot
FACTORS AFFECTING SEED GERMINATION
Extremely cold weather
1.Seed dormancy
2.Lack of water
3.Grazing
4.Other disturbances such as chicks, and lizards

International E-waste day

E-waste, a short form for the word Electronic waste, electronic devices and appliances that have reached their end of use and are disposed. Electronic waste ranges from television set, cell phones, sound devices, memory card chip, headphones, earpiece, pressing iron, hair dryer,  microwave, oven, other electronic kitchen appliances and any other electronic device we use in our day to day activities. Electronics contain both useful and harmful materials such as gold, copper, lead, mercury, cadmium, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and many more. Electronic waste can be very toxic due to the persistence of their waste product in all the Environmental mediums(soil, water and air), elements such as lead and mercury can leach into soil and water bodies causing harm to aquatics, mercury poisoning can cause brain damage in humans, lead in the other can can cause cancer, retarded growth in children and genetic mutation, similarly the release of such substance in gaseous ...

The Carbon Footprint Challenge: How You Can Make a Difference

Are you concerned about the impact of climate change on our planet? Do you want to do your part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions? Look no further! In this blog post, we will explore the concept of carbon footprint and provide you with practical tips on how to reduce your own carbon footprint. Let's dive in! WHAT IS CARBON FOOTPRINT? Carbon footprint measures the total amount of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), emitted due to various human activities. This includes our daily habits like driving a car, using electricity, and even consuming certain foods. The more carbon dioxide we emit, the larger our carbon footprint becomes. WHY DOES IT MATTER? Our carbon footprint has a direct impact on climate change. The excessive release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere traps heat and contributes to the rise in global temperatures. This, in turn, leads to severe weather conditions, such as hurricanes and droughts, and threatens the delicate balance of ...

World Cotton Day:Weaving a better future for cotton

The initiative of World Cotton Day was born in 2019, when four cotton producers in sub-Saharan Africa– Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali, known as the Cotton Four -proposed the World Trade Organization a World Cotton Day celebration on October 7(fao). In August 2021, the General Assembly of the United Nations recognised the unique benefits of cotton by proclaiming 7 October of each year as World Cotton Day. The objective of this global celebration is to raise the visibility of the cotton sector and awareness of the critical role that it plays in economic development, international trade and poverty alleviation(fao)  Cotton is the most widespread profitable non-food crop in the world. Its production provides income for more than 250 million people worldwide and employs almost 7% of all labor in developing countries. Approximately half of all textiles are made of cotton(wwf). In the 1980s and 1990s, Nigeria had, unarguably, one of Africa’s largest textile industry with over 180 text...

Does Organic Carbon Stored in Soils Reacts to Rising Temperature?

Do you know that soils globally stores more than twice as much carbon as the atmosphere?. Well, now you know. As a result of soils massive carbon storage capacity, carbon uptake and release by soils constitutes a strong regulator of atmospheric concentrations of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2). MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen funded a research that study the sensitivity of soil carbon, which is directly related to the release of CO2 from soils, under a changing climate, such as rising temperatures and/or variations in the hydrological cycle.  To further explain the mechanism behind the phenomenon, one of the researchers Dr. Vera Meyer highlighted that "Microbes that break down organic matter are generally more active under warm and humid conditions, so the carbon content in tropical soils responds very quickly to climatic changes. Some studies report a main influence of changing hydroclimatic conditions, while in others te...

Climate Adaptation: Why it Matters

It’s not just about saving the planet. It’s about protecting our homes, our food, and our future. In recent years, the conversation around climate change has grown louder—and for good reason. We see the effects everywhere: rising sea levels, extreme weather, floods, droughts, and heatwaves. While reducing emissions (climate mitigation) often takes center stage, climate adaptation is the other half of the climate action coin—and it’s just as vital. แบžszs But what exactly is climate adaptation, why does it matter, and how can communities especially in vulnerable regions like Nigeria prepare for the changes ahead? Let’s break it down:  What Is Climate Adaptation? Climate adaptation refers to the actions we take to adjust our lives, infrastructure, and policies in response to current or expected climate-related impacts. It’s like preparing your home for a storm you know is coming reinforcing your roof, elevating your furniture, and storing clean water rather than waiti...

๐Ÿ›️ Plastic Bag Free Day: Ditch the Bag, Save the Planet!

Welcome to Plastic Bag Free Day(3rd July,2025), an annual reminder that small actions like saying "no" to plastic bags can make a huge difference to our planet. If you’ve ever stared at a plastic bag tangled in a tree, drifting in the ocean, or lining your kitchen drawer for the tenth time, this post is for you. Let’s explore why ditching plastic bags matters, how you can easily make the switch.  Why Plastic Bags Are a Problem Plastic bags might seem harmless. After all, they’re lightweight, free, and everywhere. But here’s the catch: They never truly go away. It can take up to 1,000 years for a plastic bag to decompose. They harm wildlife. Marine animals often mistake plastic for food, leading to ingestion and death. They pollute waterways. Rivers carry plastic bags into oceans, creating massive garbage patches. They’re used for minutes but last forever. One bag is used for an average of 12 minutes.  ๐Ÿง  Did you know? An estimated 5 trillion plastic bags are used ...
