The Root Cause Of Flooding In Nigeria

According to the world health organization (WHO) Floods are the most frequent type of natural disaster and occur when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. Floods are often caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt or a storm surge from a tropical cyclone or tsunami in coastal areas.

Floods can cause widespread devastation, resulting in loss of life and damages to personal property and critical public health infrastructure. Between 1998-2017, floods affected more than 2 billion people worldwide. People who live in floodplains or non-resistant buildings, or lack warning systems and awareness of flooding hazard, are most vulnerable to floods.

Between 80-90% of all documented disasters from natural hazards during the past 10 years have resulted from floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, heat waves and severe storms. Floods are also increasing in frequency and intensity, and the frequency and intensity of extreme precipitation is expected to continue to increase due to climate change.

Floods can also have medium- and long-term health impacts, including:
water- and vector-borne diseases, such as cholera, typhoid or malaria.
injuries, such as lacerations or punctures from evacuations and disaster cleanup
chemical hazards.
mental health effects associated with emergency situations.
disrupted health systems, facilities and services, leaving communities without access to health care, damaged basic infrastructure, such as food and water supplies, and safe shelter.

According to the Nigerian guardian newspaper reports on damages caused by floods currently in 2020.
Flooding has cut off some communities from other parts of the state in a devastating around Hushi, Sokoto State.
Hushi, a renowned farming and fishing community, has turned ‘island,’ where the major link-way, Hushi-Wurno road, collapsed at three remote points following heavy downpours and massive flooding.

No fewer than 11,356 persons were affected by flood in six local councils, with 5,200 people displaced, 30 persons injured and 15 deaths in the recent Kebbi State flood disaster.

Dangerous reptiles have began to creep into some residential houses in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra, as a result of flood.
Ogbaru is a coastal local government with all its 16 communities on the banks of River Niger.

On 5-6 September, heavy rain and associated flooding affected Kano State (northern Nigeria), leading to fatalities, displaced people and damage. Media report that 2 people died and more than 5,000 houses were destroyed in Danbatta Area, 2 fatalities and over 200 damaged houses occurred in Rogo Area. Flooding was reported across more than 20 Local Government Areas of Kano State, and a number of people have been displaced. Recent flooding across Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto States in northern Nigeria have caused around 30 fatalities and damage to thousands of homes and crop fields. Moderate to heavy rain is forecast over central and northern Nigeria on 7-8 September.

The Root Cause Of Flooding In Nigeria
The major root cause of flooding in Nigeria include:
1.pollution
2.Unauthorized Buildings

1.Pollution:
Fossil CO2 emissions in Nigeria were 82,634,214 tons in 2016.
CO2 emissions increased by 0.70% over the previous year, representing an increase by 578,039 tons over 2015, when CO2 emissions were 82,056,175 tons.
Nigeria is ranked number nine in the list of top twelve mismanaged plastic waste polluters in the world in 2010, contributing 2.7% to the world Total plastic waste pollution.b

Due to the fact that Nigeria emits high amount of CO2 into the atmosphere, and CO2 is one of the green house gases that have the ability to trap heat. The warmer the atmosphere gets as a result of CO2 emission the higher the precipitation, and it's scientifically proven and evident that high amount of precipitation is one of the major root causes of Flooding therefore directly or indirectly air pollution contribute to flooding in Nigeria.

The fact that Nigeria is one of the world's largest Plastics polluters, and plastics are known to have stubborn nature in decomposition, plastics thrown into water bodies like rivers and lakes gather up and eventually block the free flow of water,as a result of that whenever there is high amount of rainfall, instead of the water to flow freely,it remain stagnant and eventually overflow resulting to flooding in riverine areas.

Plastics thrown into sewers also result to blockage of the sewers hindering the free flow and passage of liquid waste to their appropriate destination,as a result of this when there is high amount of rainfall an overflow occurs flooding main roads and houses around the area.

2.Unauthorized Buildings:
It is a sad reality that most of the houses in Nigeria are built either in areas that are mapped out of residential areas,or built without following the standard rules and regulations involved before mounting a house which include soil investigation to know whether the soil is suitable for the type of building you intend to mount, the typography of the area, how far is it from a water body, how many meters should be left out away from a water body before mounting a house and the height a house in a riverine area should attain.

Most of the victims of flooding are low class families that have no knowledge of these rules and regulations,in a situation where by they are aware they don't have enough resources whatsoever to abide by the said regulations.
Infact there main concern is to have a place to rest at night, wake up in the morning and hustle for what to eat.
In such circumstances even if a  forecast of impending flood  is announced to the  public, these set of people still get victimized because they have no other place to go to for safety.
Plots of lands located in riverine areas are cheap and affordable, that is the main reason less privilege citizens reside in such areas.

Possible Solutions To Flood In Nigeria
1.Climate action should be taken by both the government and the citizens of Nigeria.

2.Pollution should be controlled, government should came up with efficient recycling centers in the country in other to manage waste properly.

3.To reduce carbon emission industries should alternate the use of carbon producing materials with less harmful ones

4.plot of lands at approved residential areas should be made cheap and affordable for the less privilege citizens.

5.Free awareness on rules and regulations for a sustainable building should be given from time to time to the masses, either physically or through mass media.

Global warming

What Is Global Warming? Global warming is the increase in atmospheric, earth surface and ocean temperature caused as a result of combination of high amount of carbon monoxide (CO2) and other green house gases. Green house gases are naturally found in the atmosphere in minute quantity, the industrial activities taken place on the earth surface as a result of human persistency in acheiving development and easy living are the primary source of excess release of the green house gases into the atmosphere, such activities include burning of fossil fuels, gas exhaust from vehicles in form of CO2. All these gases that accumulates in the atmosphere trap heat that is bounce back from the earth surface to the atmosphere after the required amount is used by both plant and animals. The heat that bounces back are no longer needed by the earth surface and are meant to escape to outer space. But because of the green house gases trapping the heat, the earth surface gets hotter and hotter, this is known as ...

EFFECTIVE WAYS TO RECYCLE PLASTIC

Plastics are known to have great negative impact on the environment. Discussions and arguments arise among environmentally conscious individuals, whether plastics should be banned or recycled. Though plastic take almost forever to decomposed,it has an amazing quality for easy melting and transformation. Here are some effective ways to recycled plastic: 1.Separate Waste Bin For Degradable And Non-degradable waste. Separate waste bins should be kept in public areas, houses, hospitals and schools for collection of different kind of waste,in that way it should be easy for recycling agencies to know which waste should be dump in land fills, and which contains only Plastics that are to be recycled. As illustrated in the picture above, the yellow waste bin can be set aside for plastic waste, and the rest of the waste bins can be set aside for biodegradable wastes like spoiled food, vegetables e.t.c. 2.Get In Touch With Plastic Recycling Agencies: Plastic Recycling Agencies should be contacted immed...

PLANT NURSERY ESTABLISHMENT

NURSERY ESTABLISHMENT Nursery is a place where seeds are raised to seedlings. A nursery can be temporary, permanent, oasis nursery or floating nursery depending on the number of seedlings that needs to be raised, space availability, weather conditions, water source, accessibility, demand, terrain and the type of seed. There are various processes involved in establishing a nursery these processes include 1.Seed procurement 2.Land clearing 3.Fencing 4.Sand filling  5.Watering 6.Stacking Seed application e.t.c  SEED PROCUREMENT A seed is an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering. The formation of the seed is part of the process of reproduction in seed plants, Seed procurement involves the collection and preservation of seeds, there are many processes involved in seed collection and preservation. After collection some seeds are preserved inside hot water while some prefer cold water, the seed is then put inside a preservation tray for sun...

The Ozone Layer

Have you ever wondered what is special about these ozone layer you are seeing here and there on each post concerning climate change and other related environmental issues, well you have come to the right place to get the right information. Ozone Layer: Ozone Layer chemically represented as  O3,is a layer found in  the atmosphere,it occupied 70% of the stratosphere. The Ozone Layer is a protective blanket that protects the earth from ultraviolet rays,it protects the earth by absorbing the harmful rays coming into the earth surface, and letting only the usable one that can be absorbed by plants and animals without adversely affecting them reach the earth surface. The three molecules of oxygen that binds together to form the ozone layer (O3) are what makes the ozone layer special and thus, referred to as a protective blanket. Whenever the bond between the oxygen molecules breaks, the earth is no longer safe, the ozone layer start to deplet, and a hole is formed, when this happens ...

Closing the Gap: Accelerating Nigeria’s Progress on SDGs through Innovation and Partnerships

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Report 2025 paints a sobering picture: the world is halfway to the 2030 deadline, but only about 15% of the targets are on track globally. For Nigeria, the report highlights mixed progress, strong strides in mobile connectivity and gender representation in politics, but slower movement on poverty reduction, quality education, and clean energy access. Check my previous post to know more about the United nations  SDGs 2025 Report This chapter zeroes in on how Nigeria can close the gap, drawing from both the UN’s recommendations and real, local examples of innovation and partnership making a measurable impact. The SDG Challenge in Nigeria The UN report identifies three key bottlenecks in Nigeria’s SDG journey: 1. Funding gaps:  Development financing remains well below the estimated $100 billion annual requirement to achieve the SDGs. 2. Data gaps:  Limited real-time data makes it difficult to monitor progress and direct resour...

Do Houseplants Really Purify Indoor Air? The Science Explained.

If you’ve ever scrolled through Pinterest or Instagram, you’ve probably seen captions like “Plants are the natural air purifiers your home needs!”,  accompanied by an image of lush green Monstera leaves or cute spider plants on a sunny windowsill. It’s easy to believe that filling your room with houseplants will detox your air and help you breathe easier. However, while houseplants can play a small role in improving air quality, the science behind it is far more complex than viral posts suggest. So, do houseplants really purify indoor air or is it all just an aesthetic myth? In this week's #Greentruthswithsaadatu series Let’s dig into the science, separate fact from fantasy, and find out what’s really going on in that pot of soil by your window.  The Origin of the “Plants Clean Air” Idea The belief that houseplants purify indoor air began with one of NASA’s most famous experiments in the late 1980s. Research, led by Dr. B.C. Wolverton, tested several indoor plan...

International E-waste day

E-waste, a short form for the word Electronic waste, electronic devices and appliances that have reached their end of use and are disposed. Electronic waste ranges from television set, cell phones, sound devices, memory card chip, headphones, earpiece, pressing iron, hair dryer,  microwave, oven, other electronic kitchen appliances and any other electronic device we use in our day to day activities. Electronics contain both useful and harmful materials such as gold, copper, lead, mercury, cadmium, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and many more. Electronic waste can be very toxic due to the persistence of their waste product in all the Environmental mediums(soil, water and air), elements such as lead and mercury can leach into soil and water bodies causing harm to aquatics, mercury poisoning can cause brain damage in humans, lead in the other can can cause cancer, retarded growth in children and genetic mutation, similarly the release of such substance in gaseous ...

WORLD TSUNAMI AWARENESS DAY 2022:GET TO HIGH GROUND

The word "tsunami" comprises the Japanese words "tsu" (meaning harbour) and "nami" (meaning wave). A tsunami is a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance usually associated with earthquakes occurring below or near the ocean. Volcanic eruptions, submarine landslides, and coastal rock falls can also generate a tsunami, as can a large asteroid impacting the ocean. They originate from a vertical movement of the sea floor with the consequent displacement of water mass. Tsunami waves often look like walls of water and can attack the shoreline and be dangerous for hours, with waves coming every 5 to 60 minutes. The first wave may not be the largest, and often it is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or even later waves that are the biggest. After one wave inundates, or floods inland, it recedes seaward often as far as a person can see, so the seafloor is exposed. The next wave then rushes ashore within minutes and carries with it many floating de...

CLIMATE INJUSTICE

Climate is the average weather in a given area over a longer period of time. A description of a climate includes information on, e.g. the average temperature in different seasons, rainfall, and sunshine, classical period used for describing a climate is 30 years, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). . Wladimir Koppen divided the world's climates into categories. His categories were based on the temperature, the amount of precipitation, and the times of year when precipitation occurs. The categories were also influenced by a region’s latitude—the imaginary lines used to measure our Earth from north to south from the equator. five main types of climates are: A: Tropical. In this hot and humid zone, the average temperatures are greater than 64°F (18°C) year-round and there is more than 59 inches of precipitation each year. B: Dry. These climate zones are so dry because moisture is rapidly evaporated from the air and there is very little precipitation. C: Temperat...
