Living in harmony with nature is not just ideal it is essential.
This year’s International Day for Biological Diversity shines a spotlight on the urgent need for Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development. As we confront the global crises of biodiversity loss, climate change, and environmental degradation, this theme reminds us: a healthy planet supports healthy people and a sustainable future.
Biodiversity is life. Biodiversity is our life.
Today, as we mark World Biodiversity Day, we’re reminded of the beauty and importance of nature’s variety, right here in Nigeria an at global level.
What Is Biodiversity and Why Is It Crucial?
Biodiversity is the variety of life, plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms and the ecosystems they create. It supports everything we rely on:
1.Food security: through pollination and fertile soils
2.Clean air and water: via forests and wetlands
3.Medicines: derived from native plants and wildlife
4.Cultural identity and traditional knowledge: Nature inspires art, spirituality, and identity across cultures.
Biodiversity is the natural engine that drives sustainable development. Without it, we can’t achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—from zero hunger and clean water to climate action and sustainable cities.
Nigeria: A Nation Blessed with Natural Wealth
Nigeria is one of Africa’s most biodiverse countries, with ecosystems ranging from tropical rainforests in Cross River State to the savannahs of the north and the Niger Delta wetlands. These areas are home to:
-Over 940 species of birds
-About 250 species of mammals
-Unique plants found nowhere else on Earth.
But this wealth is under pressure. Deforestation, oil spills, urban expansion, and climate change are driving habitat loss and species extinction. According to the UN, around 1 million species are at risk of extinction.
How to help as an Individual
Harmony With Nature Starts With Us.
Here’s how Nigerians can Be Part of the Plan and foster harmony with nature:
1. Support eco-friendly businesses and sustainable agriculture.
2. Support conservation: Volunteer with or donate to groups like Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF).
3. Say no to bushmeat: Choose sustainable food options and protect endangered species.
4. Plant indigenous trees: Help restore degraded land and urban green spaces.
5. Educate others: Talk to friends and family about biodiversity and why it matters.
6. Reduce, reuse, recycle: Minimize waste and protect ecosystems.
Let’s Keep Nigeria Wild and Wonderful
This World Biodiversity Day, let’s commit to restoring balance. Nigeria’s ecosystems, wildlife, and communities can thrive, if we choose harmony over harm and sustainability over short-term gain.
Nature is not separate from us—we are part of it. Let's live like it.
World Biodiversity Day is more than a celebration, it’s a commitment. Whether you’re in Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, or Tilden Fulani, your actions matter. Let’s protect Nigeria’s biodiversity for ourselves and for generations to come.
